1751054 epfcdkuntdkzjyiohwkixywgzwhwkp.medium 48czGroup Therapy: Group therapy is a powerful method of treatment in which individuals with similar problems, issues, or treatment needs meet face-to-face in a group setting with a therapist to improve their functioning. As part of the group process, members offer each other support and share similar experiences. Through their shared experiences and the guidance of the group facilitator / therapist, group members begin to bond as they share positive strategies that have helped them cope and challenge or therapeutically confront each other's negative thoughts or behaviors in an accepting, non-judgmental, and supportive environment.


In group therapy, the clinician helps guide and facilitate interactions among the group members to ensure the group process is a productive one for all participants. As part of their role, the therapist will help the group remain focused on their purpose to alleviate identified problems and the development of positive, adaptive coping skills. There are several positive outcomes and benefits to group therapy. For example, a small therapeutic group may center on interventions designed to produce a positive change in behavior (e.g., the ability to utilize relaxation skills or deep breathing techniques for individuals who experience severe anxiety or panic attacks). Interaction between members in group therapy allows the individual to develop and practice new skills in a safe and supportive environment. In addition, this interaction allows other group members to develop new insight as they can witness first-hand how they may react or respond in similar situations.


Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy [CBT] Coping Skills Group - August 2017: Backed by years of empirical support and widely accepted by mental health practitioners, CBT is a highly structured group intervention that teaches individuals to identify and learn effective problem-solving skills, how to express feelings and how to focus on the “here and now” to minimize thoughts and behavior that lead to problems. The interventions in group therapy feature modeling, role-play, help the client challenge irrational or negative thoughts and therapeutic homework exercises.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy [DBT] Skills Group:

Frequently used to treat the symptoms associated with Borderline Personality Disorder, clients in DBT can expect to be assigned therapeutic homework, role-play alternate ways of interacting with other people, and practice positive and adaptive coping skills such as distress tolerance, emotion regulation, mindfulness, radical acceptance, interpersonal effectiveness and other positive means of managing intense feelings or emotions when angry, depressed, anxious, or upset. These adaptive skills are an important component of DBT and are reviewed in weekly groups as the Group Facilitator helps clients to learn, apply and master DBT skills.


DBT helps clients recognize negative, faulty or erroneous thoughts, beliefs, and assumptions that make it difficult for people to function in life or in their relationships. DBT is extremely collaborative in that it requires ongoing focus on relationships between the client and their therapist.

Issues Addressed: Symptoms frequently associated with Borderline Personality Disorder such as severe depression, trauma, anxiety, pattern of engaging in self-harm behaviors, cutting, suicidal thoughts / suicidal urges, and suicidality.
